Register Adopts A Single Accent And Two Faces, To Nobody's Visible Distress

Sample D is the same engine as Sample C with every axis pushed the other way. Different faces, one accent tier, two columns, a coloured first letter, and not one line of JavaScript.

Ashgrove has kept its Register the same way for as long as anyone has bothered to check, which is to say the practice is old and the records are not. The Michaelmas number runs to four pages and is read mostly for the classifieds.

This page exists to prove a narrow point. Sample C and this one come out of the same broadsheet layout, the same stylesheet function and the same section renderers — and they do not look like the same paper. That is the difference between a template and a skin.

The drop cap here is a coloured ::first-letter — no extra markup, no aria juggling. Sample C's reversed cap needs a real element, because a pseudo-element cannot carry a background block on a justified column. That single difference is the only place a token changes the HTML rather than the CSS.

An Account Of What The Two Samples Hold In Common

Set the two pages side by side and the shared bones are obvious once you look for them: the nameplate between double rules, the ears above it, the dateline strip below, the folio heading each inside page, the justified columns, the tombstone at the end of a story.

Set them side by side at thumbnail size and they read as two different papers. That is the test a parameterized template has to pass — not that it can produce variety, but that the variety lands where the brand lives and nowhere else.

The build refuses configs it cannot render honestly. A text colour that fails contrast on the tint panels stops the build. A notice template that references a field that does not exist stops the build. A missing masthead stops the build. None of those become a page that looks fine and is quietly wrong.
