The notices below were read out of the `name` table of the exact .woff2 files shipped here (nameID 0 and 14), not from an upstream README, so they describe what this deployment actually serves. Space Grotesk ------------- Copyright 2020 The Space Grotesk Project Authors (https://github.com/floriankarsten/space-grotesk) File(s) in this directory: space-grotesk-var.woff2 Licence: SIL Open Font License 1.1 (https://scripts.sil.org/OFL) ================================================================================ -------------------------------------------------------------------------------- MODIFICATION STATUS — these files are latin-SUBSET builds (measured 2026-08-20) -------------------------------------------------------------------------------- Every font in this directory is a SUBSET of its upstream original: each covers ~229-231 Unicode codepoints (ASCII, Latin-1, a little Latin Extended-A, general punctuation, one currency sign) and NO Greek, Cyrillic or Vietnamese. For Literata the reduction is measured: 229 codepoints / 327 glyphs here, against 918 codepoints / 1,789 glyphs in the upstream original — a 75% cut, which is why none of these files can claim Functional Equivalence (see below). Under the SIL OFL this makes them MODIFIED VERSIONS. The OFL FAQ is explicit: 2.6 Is subsetting a webfont considered modification? Yes. Removing any parts of the font when delivering a webfont to a browser, including unused glyphs and smart font code, is considered modification. This is permitted by the OFL but would not normally allow the use of RFNs. Subsetting is therefore PERMITTED and these files are properly licensed. *** THE OPEN ITEM ON THIS PAGE IS CLOSED (2026-08-20). *** This directory used to serve a latin subset of Adobe's Source Serif 4, whose own copyright declares a Reserved Font Name ("Source"). Per FAQ 2.6 a subset is a Modified Version, and per FAQ 2.7-2.8 a Modified Version may carry an RFN only if it preserves Functional Equivalence — whose first criterion is the same full character inventory. Measured, ours did not: 231 codepoints / 331 glyphs against 918 / 1,463 upstream, a 75% reduction. So the name was not ours to use. Resolved by SUBSTITUTION rather than by renaming or by serving the full font: * Literata declares NO Reserved Font Name, so a subset may keep the name. * It was designed and tested for extended screen reading, and its lower stroke contrast holds up better on this build's dark ground than a high-contrast face, which thins out in light-on-dark. * It matches the axes that were actually in use (wght 200-900 + opsz), so no CSS weight or optical-size range had to change. * The pair is 984 BYTES SMALLER than the pair it replaced (171,768 vs 172,752). Coverage was matched deliberately: the new subset was cut to the exact codepoint list of the file it replaced. Two of the 231 could not be carried — U+0329 COMBINING VERTICAL LINE BELOW and U+2002 EN SPACE, neither of which exists in upstream Literata. Both were verified absent from every rendered page and from the source prose before the swap, rather than assumed harmless. (A version string is NOT evidence of an unmodified file: a subsetter preserves the `name` table, so these files still carry their upstream `gftools` / `hotconv` build stamps despite being subsets. That inference was made and corrected here.) The two Source Serif 4 subsets were left on disk when the swap shipped — no page referenced them any more, but this directory is served, so they were still publicly fetchable under a name that was not ours to use. They were DELETED 2026-08-20 with Kerry's approval (172 KB). Git retains them. The notices above therefore describe every file now present, with nothing extra being served.
